Business Information Security: Changing Landscape Requires New Technology
The expansion of technology, the increasing amount of activity on business networks and the increased need for online security is changing the way companies collect, store and protect information. Protecting company information is no longer just about looking for anomalies in data to determine security breaches or suspect activity. Now, security encompasses so much more than that and needs to be analyzed in much more detailed and scientific ways.
Jon Oltsik of Enterprise Strategy Group expounds on this idea in his recent article “In today’s security analytics, every bit of data matters.“ Oltsik notes that this type of data analysis requires much more robust and powerful information management systems than many being used by large businesses today. Many large companies are already looking to swap out their existing infrastructure for something a little more robust in order to better protect themselves.
The question for readers here is, does this apply to a small business model? In the short term, perhaps not. Fewer employees on a network, more control on a centralized infrastructure, and tighter restrictions set by a small IT staff can provide a level of security inline with the need of a smaller business. However, as businesses grow and expand, more detailed analysis of a network may be needed which may require a more complex data collection infrastructure. I suspect that buying new expensive equipment that can make some of these calculations and analysis discussed by Oltsik possible is not necessary for most small businesses in place today.
Much of this can be handled by an IT expert who can readily implement such safe guards.
