How Important is Data Backup?
With the amount of information in the world growing by the day, the importance of backing up your business’s data cannot be overstated. In a recent online presentation, Systems Engineer Chris Dedham noted the rate of data per person has been increasing exponentially over the last decade. In 2003, there were 0.8 GB of data per person; by 2006, that number had risen to 24 GB per person, and an unprecedented 124 GB of data per person is projected for 2010. Hopefully, these numbers are bringing some important questions to mind — the first of which: “How confident am I in our current data backup solution?”
Dedham also notes that the leading cause of data loss is human error, followed closely by software corruption and virus attacks. Additionally, other factors such as hardware error, sabotage, and natural disasters, also play a larger part in data loss than you may think. As such, not only is it imperative to consistently be backing up your data, but it’s also wise to have a disaster recovery plan in place.
Frankly, data loss translates into profit loss. And if you’re looking to save yourself from trouble down the road, here are a couple crucial questions to ask yourself or your CIO when it comes to data backup solutions.
- Do you have a system in place?
- Is it tested and utilized frequently?
With figures like the ones mentioned above, the need for the ability to backup and restore data is evident. If you are currently operating without a data backup solution that you’re confident in — or if you’re operating without one entirely — contact a data backup specialist today.
