How to Successfully Implement Virtualization
Recently, we’ve talked much about the new virtualization technology including what it is, why it’s important, and its implications for small businesses, but answering all those questions still leaves a number of others regarding the revolutionary technology. Let’s say, for instance, you’ve been sitting with the concept of virtualization for awhile now and realize the kind of positive impact it could have on your organization; the next question you will inevitably ask is: “How do I successfully implement virtualization into my organization?”
To answer that question, I’ve listed a number of helpful step-by-step instructions below to ensure incorporating virtualization technologies into your organization is not only successful but easy to understand and implement as well.
1. Plan on paper first. In order to make virtualization implementation successful, your organization needs a detailed strategy and plan of attack. Everything from costs to installation to management to risk analysis should be well thought through.
2. Get a professional involved. If the first step seems daunting to you, I recommend allowing an IT expert in your area to help guide your company through the entire process. While virtualization can most definitely impact your company in a positive way, the technology can do just the opposite if not handled properly.
3. Test it. This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people overlook this crucial step. Be sure the new technology can fully support your needs before you turn it loose.
4. Phase out previous technology slowly. There’s something to be said about not having all your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Even if you’re certain virtualization technology is right for your organization, keep the “old” technologies around for awhile just to be safe.
