Is what my employees are doing dangerous?
We talk a lot about disaster recovery, data loss and prevention at Ascensha. Losing sensitive information can have devastating results – loss of customers, compromise of financial infrastructure, loss of industry respect. That’s why we are always stressing security with our clients. Many businesses come to us and don’t realize some of the every day activities they do that have the potential to be data loss dangers. Below is just a sample of day-to-day activities you or your employees may be doing without realizing the risk you are taking:
- Forwarding files or email content: If not properly protected these emails can be forwarded again and again to unknown recipients with unknown intentions.
- Copying company/client files to a USB drive: Little USB drives are easily lost along with their contents.
- Sending files via instant messenger or chat software: These are often unsecure gateways that can be mined for information and attachments
- Using Blackberrys, iPhones or other portable devices to manage company email: Phones can be stolen, read or hacked if not properly protected.
These are every day activities for most – things we have to do to get work done. But as information technology grows and diversifies, companies have to learn to be smart about how they manage all of their information.
Looking ahead: We’ll help explain how your company can do the things above safely.
