Is your Wi-Fi secure?
Many small businesses utilize wireless Internet access, or wireless fidelity (a.k.a. “wi-fi”), either for their day-to-day operations or for their customers’ use — or both. In fact, for businesses that see customers on a regular basis, patrons often expect wi-fi to be a provided amenity. As your customers and/or employees necessitate Internet access, what are you doing to protect your wireless fidelity? Is your wi-fi secure?
According to our friends at SmallBizResource.com, security for wireless networks has been an ever-present problem since their inception in the mid-1990s. For instance, initial wireless security solutions such as WEP and WPA have since become susceptible to hackers, though WPA 2 is currently enjoying success. But who knows for how long? For wi-fi providers, it’s absolutely necessary to stay current on the latest threats and solutions concerning wireless network security. And if that’s something you’re uncomfortable doing, make sure you’re utilizing professional technical support.
The bottom line: if you’re not using any form of wireless security, start. And strongly consider using WPA 2. You’re simply asking for trouble without a secure network, and you’re putting yourself and your customers at unnecessary risk. If you’re unfamiliar with information security, or for added wi-fi protection, consult a local wireless networking expert.
