Benefits of Remote Access Through The Cloud

Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) stand to benefit greatly from cloud computing. This green computing technology allows companies to pay for server space on a pay-as-you-go basis. In this way, cloud computing frees SMB owners from purchasing and renewing expensive software and on-site storage for each employee. Instead of maintaining stacks on stacks of servers on-site, cloud computing users purchase space on remote servers maintained by companies such as Amazon and Google. Everything from basic word processing programs to complex data analysis applications can then be accessed through the internet, rather than stored on individual hard drives or local servers. In addition to instant scalability and lowered operating costs, a major benefit of cloud computing is that it allows remote access of business applications and documents.

Five Questions to Ask Before Storing Data in the Cloud

Cloud computing is the current IT buzz term. According to research from the World Economic Forum, potential users from around the world see multiple possible benefits from cloud technologies, including increased collaboration capabilities and reduced IT costs. With huge prospective changes in health care, education, and business, the impact of cloud data storage could exceed that of mobile technology. However, as the above hype cycle graph from Gartner Research shows, we are at the peak of inflated expectations for this new technology, and we’re beginning to tip into the “trough of disillusionment,” when users will recognize the drawbacks of switching to the cloud. CIO magazine’s survey of IT professionals shows that IT professionals are indeed more concerned about cloud computing hang-ups than they were just a year ago. Their main concerns include loss of control over data, vendor lock-in, and regulation and compliance confusion. Additionally, the WEF’s research found that 63% of IT providers are concerned about privacy requirements for cloud computing.

When Using SaaS Makes Sense (And When It Doesn’t)

According to a popular aphorism, “You can’t expect to meet the challenges of today with yesterday’s tools and expect to be in business tomorrow.”  No one would disagree; why stick to pencil and paper today, when computers are available? The difficulty lies in knowing when adopting new technology would be beneficial to one’s business. Currently, the corporate world is experiencing growing pains around cloud computing and technologies like SaaS, or Software as a Service. The main difference between SaaS and traditional software is distribution. SaaS is not sold for individual, local use, but is provided as needed through the Internet. As trendy as SaaS is right now, there are times when a SaaS solution just doesn’t make sense. At other times, there is little reason not to choose SaaS. This article will suggest when SaaS makes sense from a business perspective.
