Is your organization prepared for a disaster?

Many are still reeling from the loss and devastation in Haiti after the Caribbean country suffered the effects of a massive 7.0 earthquake early last week. And while world relief organizations have already begun to send aid, we know the recovery of this hurting nation will be long and difficult. At Ascensha, we hope for the healing of this nation, and we also hope the tragedy raises awareness concerning natural disaster planning and recovery. Unfortunately, since there is simply no way of accurately predicting when and where disasters like the one in Haiti will strike, it’s imperative to have a working disaster recovery plan in place. For those businesses who don’t already have a plan, here are a few quick steps to get you started.

Data Management Tips for Your Small Business

In the last post, we alerted business owners to the potential disasters of data loss or limited data access. Today, along the same vein, we want to address overcoming the pitfalls of all data management within small businesses. We briefly made the argument for outsourcing data prevention services, noting that most small businesses are ill-equipped to effectively manage their IT operations. In forgoing the assistance of information technology experts, many small businesses are taking unnecessary risks operating their own data management systems, which is an essential function of any organization given our present technology-driven marketplace.

How Important is Data Backup?

With the amount of information in the world growing by the day, the importance of backing up your business’s data cannot be overstated. In a recent online presentation, Systems Engineer Chris Dedham noted the rate of data per person has been increasing exponentially over the last decade. In 2003, there were 0.8 GB of data per person; by 2006, that number had risen to 24 GB per person, and an unprecedented 124 GB of data per person is projected for 2010. Hopefully, these numbers are bringing some important questions to mind — the first of which: “How confident am I in our current data backup solution?”
