Answer: On the surface, yes, utilizing a recovery application will give you a good chance of recovering a stolen machine.  Developers claim that by using their software, 90 to 95% of stolen laptops can be recovered. Some, such as Absolute Software, even provide a $1,000 recovery guarantee.

Question: How can I protect data on portable devices?

Answer: It is not uncommon to see headlines about large companies losing backup tapes, consequently exposing thousands of customers’ information to potentially malicious eyes. Unfortunately, losses of sensitive information occur so frequently with small businesses that it is hardly newsworthy. Laptops get stolen. USB flash drives get misplaced. The value of the compromised information is staggering, although companies often prefer not to estimate the damages or, in some cases, notify customers.
